Question about tires 285/45/22 vs 305/40/22

I am not all that familiar with tires and sizes so I was wanting some help.

is a 305/40/22 just about the same size as a 285/45/22?

I am guess the 305 would be wider than the 285 and the 285 45 would be taller than the 40. Since the 305 would be wider would it compensate the difference in height since it would be going on a Stock width 22?

I have seen pictures of folks rides with both tires and frankly they seem to look very similar almost identical from the side.

Can someone who knows more about this school me...Thanks!

Reason I ask is that Discount tire has the Good Year Futura SL edition on sale on the 305/40/22 for $155 vs the 285/45/22 @ $279 same brand and style.

I don't understand why they are more than $100 more but since they seem to be the same size its almost a no brainer to get the 305/40/22.......or am I missing something??

You will get a little bit of rubbing at full lock with the 305's from what I understand

I thought so too, but none so far on the Denali.

Actually I lie, a couple of weeks ago I backed up slowly up a hill at full lock at it rubbed slightly.

My 305's rub at full lock..but I was told that the particular brand they are run wider than the average 305..closer to a 315. I am also lowered 3/4.
