So some of my buddies told me to get the 3:73 swap and I've been thinking bout it. But I wanna know if that's a good swap for me trying to build a race truck and also trying to daily her as of now, so in the middle of speed and mpg. And also, if I just do the gears right now and wait a few months to do a locked diff would it have any extra risk of breaking If I just pop the swap in or would it be fine? How much faster would it make my truck like acceleration and torque, like what is the difference from stock. And I also don't know who the reliable manufacturers are for these type of items. Help please :) I'm exited to start building a race Tahoe

What's your current setup gear wise and what do you plan to do with the truck if you building a "race" truck I would think you would be looking at least at 4.10 up to 4.56 gears. I would do the gear swap with a locker at the same time. Why pay labor twice? Tire size is also going to impact gearing. Transmission too..what's your goal?

Thinking about getting up too a 6.2 with the 85e transmission. I'm not sure on my tire size yet but my stock gears just went out so I figured just get a swap while the truck needs repair anyway. And I'm on stock gears right now, probably 3,73 but I haven't checked since my truck at the shop

it this point ditch the 10 bolt rear too

10 bolt rears are kinda weak. not many race with them.

The 85e is geared differently. 1st gear is the same as 2nd in the 60 I believe. The o/d gear is shorter so you turn higher rpm. Something else to think about. If you really wanna race the 80 is still the way to go..

There's a guy running 9's with a 10 bolt. It can be built up with a better locker, stronger axles and cover and some bracing.. but I would think a 14 bolt would be better. I just haven't seen anyone do it to a tahoe.

What's a good locking diff to buy and like how do I buy it. Don't know much abt that either. I have to make my decision today on gears so I'm desperately looking for a good swap lol. I might go with 4.10 now. Idk lol

Detroit tru trac seems to be the way to go. Made by eaton. You can buy from Summit, Jegs or one company I prefer is drivetrain specialist.com. Really helpful tech line and helped me spec a yoke for my Trans swap. Also talked to them about the gear/posi swap and they know their stuff.
