It's actually the opposite. Removing the resonator makes it louder. The resonator muffles the exhaust system.

Have you tried to compare it to an escalade to see if the esky is quieter?
Although it's unlikely, GM might have put a quieter system in the esky for the old folks that drive 'em.
For what it is worth, the newer dual exhaust 6.2 escalades resolve this issue and the exhaust is as, if not quiter than that of the 5.3s.
