I have the infamous noise under my hood from either my compressor or Belt tensioner so I took it to the shop for inspection. I was told that the compressor and the belt tensioner bearings were bad and they gave me a quote for the repairs. Now this shop is Firestone who I know are probably a little more expensive than other non dealer repair shops but I wonder if they are doing more work than needs to be done. Here's the break right off the Recommended Services printout.

Compressor & clutch $457
Drier Accumulator $122.27
Orifice Tube $2.84
Poly rib belt $26.99
Tensioner $62.99
A/C evacuate and recharge $117.99
Labor $251.10

Total after taxes and shop supplies $1143.33

I don't know much about AC systems/prices but it couldn't hurt to get a second opinion.

Quote seems about right. I've always been told to replace the AC system on the GMT800's when they fail is around $1000 to $1500.

Yep you guys are right. I got a second opinion and it was $100 cheaper. The second quote was $1048. He did the quote by phone. However he did tell me that he wanted to inspect it himself because he said that the tensioner don't always have to be replaced.

I just went thru this a month or two ago. Cheapest quote I got was 1100. I ended up just doing it myself, its actually not that hard. Also, every quote I got they wanted to use a reman compressor or a cheap 4 seasons brand compressor. I ordered a genuine AC-Delco compressor from Rockauto.com for just under 300 bucks. A Delco tensioner is only about 30 bucks from Rockauto. And for the belt, I would replace both belts with Goodyear Gatorback belts.
