Ok, so my radio is starting to take a dump on me and I'm looking to replace it.
I have an 05 denali with factory Bose and navigation.
I was thinking of searching junk yards for a replacement to keep it original. I've seen the head unit for around $150. That's a lot cheaper the any aftermarket.

What I was wondering is what years I can pull the radio out of that would be compatible.

Thanks.

From what I understand, factory radios are coded to the VIN of the vehicle that they were originally installed in, and you will need to have it reprogrammed to work with your vehicle.

EDIT: Actually, I just did a quick search and it looks like if you are willing to crack the replacement radio open, there is a single chip you can remove to bypass the VIN lock.

Yes I know that. Most dealers will reprogram it for a fee.
The radios are also tied to the "computer" in the vehicle. Not all GM factory radios will work in all GM vehicles.
I am looking to find out what year Tahoe, or yukon, I can pull the radio out of.
Will any 00 - 06 work or can I expand my search.

Gotcha.

Putting your vehicle and radio specs into car-part.com it looks like all the donor vehicles listed are 2005-2006 Denalis/Escalades/Z71s/Avalanches.

^that is correct. The pre-2005 models from what i understand are not compatible in the 2005 and 2006 trucks. Not sure why but that's what I've read. I replaced the factory nav system in my 2006 in the spring last year. But I went aftermarket. I wanted Bluetooth calling and streaming abilities as well as an updated nav system. It's way better than the stock unit.

Thanks that helps. I would like to go aftermarket but $500 is my limit right now. That includes the harnesses. I'll install myself.

Do you know if I can look at Silverado as well?

I just replaced the factory nav in my '05 Tahoe LT if you're interested in it. Buttons are worn down but it's otherwise perfectly functional and has 2 of the map discs with it.

I bought my clarion unit that does everything I wanted for $500. If you decide to look into aftermarket there are deals out there that will do you want. You just have to know how to shop for them.
