His really spotty on the paint which is common for a rattle can.

I would have to see that car up close but I cannot see a roller even giving you close to workable surface.

Sorry don't believe it. His paint looked like shit in the first pic and you are going to tell me that a little sanding is going to even up the splotchyness? I guess everything on the internet is correct...

I lucked out at got a garage kept specimen, therefore have not had to worry about my paint. I do know that I can not paint to save my life. A 4 door SUV is not even on the radar for me,..

Spray bombs can turn out satisfactory, most don't though.

You have to use good paint (OP is painting is black so probably not). A car I used to own was sprayed white with some expensive stuff from autozone (like $8 a can) and it came out good for the money spent. Nothing like real automotive paint though...

Prep and prime and put a bunch of coats on.

I know rustoluem makes all kinds of different stuff that come out decent.
