So my rear brake backing plates are pretty much completely rusted off, took it into the shop becuz the brakes were squeaking and they said everything checked out good except the backing plates were pretty much rusted off (one actually fell off while they were showing me). So the guy at the shop said he could get them for me for like $130 and it would be like 6 hours of labor since they had to take out the axles. Anyway that didn't sound like the road i was going to take, did some research and watched some videos from 1Aauto, and seen the 2 piece backing plate that doesn't require u to take out the axles. So i ordered them, new parking brake shoes, rotors, and pads. So my question is, I'm sure many have dealt with this problem and did i go about it the right way? And will the 2 piece ones work ok?

One is completely torn off and the other is about half there, only problem is ever since this has happened the rear brakes having been squeaking when light pressure is applied.

That's a lot of money for a piece of metal that's not really needed. You most likely have some rust or corrosion that need to be removed or cleaned up. All it soil take you is your time

Thanks for ur help, definitely appreciated. One thing I had read is that the parking brake connects thru the back of the backing plate to the adjuster and that if the plate is not there then it can throw ur adjuster off and cause ur parking brake to rub or things of that nature. What are ur thoughts?

I don't have an exact diagram in front of me but I'm sure you can make a mount yourself from a hardware store. Parking brakes are adjustable so you have room to work with

The squealing you`re hearing could also be part of the backing plate contacting the rotor. If that`s the case just bend it back away from the rotor.

It's a pretty easy fix with the 2 piece ones. Just use tin snips to cut the old ones off, and the new ones go on pretty easy. It's a couple hour job. Whoever came up with the 2 piece idea was a genius. Having to pull the axles would be crazy. But then I had to do this to my daughters VW just to swap headlights today. image.jpeg
