Rear Diff fluid level??

Question on the fluid level. I just changed the rear diff oil for the first time. I have a 2004 Yukon with approx 107k miles. I poured the old oil back in the quart containers and only had about 1.6 quarts of oil. Is that bad? I guess it is good that I finally changed out the oil. I put about 2 3/4 quarts back in with synthetic Mobil1 gear oil.

It didnt look like there were any leaks or drips on the garage floor. The rear diff was definately dirty and covered in grease but it looks like it had been ther a while. I didnt notice any wet spots or dripping oil.

But now I have another concern. I just did the front diff as well and it was extremely dirty. and a piece of metal came out also. I have auto AWD so I cannot select 4wd, it just does it automatically as it needs it (my model has no button to select 2wd), and it rarely ever gets used.

but my concern is this piece of metal. Should I be worried?

I`m not sure where that metal could have come from. Maybe someone else knows.

Was there a lot of shavings on the magnet on the tip of the bolt as well?

The front diff takes 1.8 quarts if you haven`t figured it out yet.

My 05 Escalade was the same way. It concerns me a little bit as these vehicles seem to have common rear end problems with whine/humm/groaning.

I purchased mine at 82K miles and it makes the groaning noise. I'm wondering if that has to do with running low fluid for a substantial amount of time.

Well, everything still seems to work. I dont see any leaks in the rear.

The front still works also but that piece of metal is concerning. Plus it has lots of metal shavings on the magnet. For now I am not going to do anything about it but at some point I'll see what it takes to get the front diff rebuilt.

There was also what looks like some kind of rubber vent hose on the front diff. I am not sure what that is for but it was split where it connects to the diff so I just trimmed the split area and pushed it back on the hose connector.

I had lube locker gaskets on my jeep and loved them. Do these have a 10 bolt or 14 bolt
