I noticed today while my truck was parked idle that the rear diff was making a pinging sound. The same sound a vehicle makes when you shut it off after a long drive except the truck was running. Is this supposed to be happening?

do you always hear the pinging noise? Is there any way you can post a video or sound clip of the noise?

Differentials should never make noise while sitting still. Unless maybe the diff is very low on gear oil and it`s getting very hot and making the noise when it`s cooling off?

That's exactly what I was thinking. A diff should never get hot enough to make that little tink-tink-tink noise.

From what I understand it's not uncommnon for them to leak lube. After purchasing my Escalade at 82K miles i serviced the rear diff. Only pulled 1.5qts out, put 2.75qts back in. Saw other posts about the same finding when others serviced their diffs.
