RearEnd Rebuild

I have a 96 OBS with a 10-bolt rear. It's gonna need some TLC soon. The Rear End whines real good. I have a trustworthy mechanic that has been helping it along but I will soon need to address the problem. Gear ratio is currently 3.42.

The real question is: What is the ball-park cost for rebuilding a 10-bolt rear End??? Assume that we were going to stick with the original gear ratio.

I ask because I got quoted what I felt was a ridiculous price to have this done, which did include a ratio change, but those parts are not that pricey IMO. I would consider doing it myself but I honestly don't have the tools or press to get this job done correctly.

Rear end rebuilds cost money because you pay for what you get. If you want cheap labor the rear end is going to suffer. The labor cost should be the same whether you swap the ratio or not, the work is the same and honestly at this point since you don't know for sure what is whining the gear set should be replaced. I did my rear end at home, I used a solid pinion spacer and was able to heat the bearing to get it to slide onto the pinion once I calculated the correct shim. The only thing I needed pressed was the old bearing off the old pinion to get the size of the old shim, the machine shop didn't charge me for that.

Is your truck 4WD? Does the front axle have to match the rear axle from a ratio standpoint?

I was quoted $2600 for just the rear axle, including new gears, shims, bearings, seals etc.

Yes it's 4x4, so the front and rear ratios need to match.

naw man go to an auto parts recycler or something i got an complete rear axle for a f150 i owned for 500 bucks and swappinga rear axle out is alot cheaper then rebuilding one

plus rebuilding an rear end is sticky project the first one i did i went thru 3 crush bearings
if you go to far on a crush bearing thats it start over get a new one

That is kind of high on the price, You can buy a fresh REMAN assembly for that kind of money.

A complete parts setup not including the axles or carrier is about $400.
