I wanna rebuild my engine in my hoe. but dont know what really to buy for it. I found a rebuild kit on summit website for 298 and it says with a 4 inch bore, standard rod and standard main. or a kit for 250 with 4.000 inch bore
.010 in rod, .010 in main. and these kits dont included new pistons, camshaft, lifters, camshaft, oil pump shaft, timing chain or gears. so what should i do? my truck only has 160000 miles on it it dont need to be rebuilt but i figure i should to keep for long hual. am i better off just buying a new gm crate motor or rebuilding it? from what im thinking its gonna come out to the same price. Any suggestions?

Building an engine is fun and a great learning experience. It can be pretty costly if you put something in backwards or miss something which is easy to do. I would suggest you get a crate engine.

x2 on crate motor. Then go grab a nice core motor and build that to learn on and jack around with as you learn that way you're not holding up your project and crate motors almost always come with a warranty :waytogo:

I picked up a crate from Paceperformance. I pulled and installed th enew 350 in a weekend with a buddy. She is running great and ran perfectly on a 1200 mile trip towing my 7x12 tandom axle trailer.

Here is a thread I started on this topic... I think page 7 has the pictures of the motor install

X3 on crate motor. I picked up my 350 from a GM dealership. It was $4000 installed including taxes. If you pick a crate motor it comes with new motor mounts, new ground straps, new heads, cam, lifters, valves, valve seals, etc. Pretty much new everything except intake, dizzy and manifolds. And it did come with a warranty. 3yrs or 60,000kms anything that went wrong with it and it would be replaced, including labour.

Mine had a core charge of $150 to send back my old long block. I declined. For $150 I keep it in my garage and will maybe use/rebuild/have fun with it for something else like retorq and 07burb says.

If you do pick the new crate motor, you have some choices to make. I didn't know these choices until after I bought it and then joined this place. I would have done things a little bit different had I known.

For another $1000, I could have had a 383 crate motor. I would have spent the $1000. Also, when having the new long block installed, ask for the MPFI upgrade to be done at the same time. Excellent time to have it done. It will cost you 0 extra $$ in labour to have it installed as they already have the oem spider apart to swap over.

I know its alot of $$$, but it will be easy for you to go for it if you,
a) plan on keeping your truck for the long haul.
b) want to turn the key and be confident it would start every time as your DD.
c) really, really like the OBS vs a NBS or NNBS.

I ordered mine from a dealership in Illinois. It was a tad over $4k shipped to my house and was essentially 'plug and play' with just adjustments to the timing and tweaks to the carb needed. It's referee to as the 350/330hp 'H.O. Deluxe' and also came with a 3 year 36,000 mile warranty. It has run flawlessly and has made my 34 year old truck extremely reliable!

Does it run pretty good and does it come with a warranty? If so, that's a nice price right there! :waytogo:

Where are they? Are you happy with how it all turned out? Warranty? I'm in Longview and would like to be prepared when the time comes to swap motors in my yukon
