I know that it is recommended that the high octane be used in the 6.2L motor but would it be fine to run the regular octane?

I run it, it will just retard the timing and you will get a little less mileage.

In regards to long term effects, will it harm the engine?

Yer 6.2 liter has a higher compression ratio this generates more heat and high octane fuel is more heat resistant then regular so running 87 will cause knocking or pre ignition

It has knock sensors and retards timing to prevent spark knock.

I always run either 89 or 91 octane and alternate between them. No 87 for me.

It will not like 87 octane.
My salesman said not to run anything other than 87 in it when I bought it. He said it was a waste of $$$.
Well guess what, 100 miles later and the check engine light came on and it would not go above 35 mph.
I drove slowly and painfully to the gas station, filled the remainder of the tank with high octane, and within 15 minutes of driving it was back to normal. Maybe it was bad gas, I don't know.
I have always been a believer when an engine builder recommends high octane only, to at least go with 89+.

And there inlies the rub.... the motor has to have that knock event FIRST before it retards that ignition.
Our motors have pretty high compression, are pretty lean on emissions and make around 58 ftlbs or more per connecting rod, piston skirt or rod bearing?

That's a lot of umph that only needs one activation to say bye bye.

Can you run 87? Sure it will run. It will probably run on 85. But I doubt it will run on 81 3rd world.
But if it were me, I wouldn't use anything over 50% throttle, drive in the heat, or carry much load.

Just cause the motor will turn with out a CE, doesn't mean it should.

The very fact that you have knock events and that your DAM permanently retards your timing to run is a bad thing. Not a cool adaptability thing.


What's that cool gas they give out in the military that just about any vehicle can run off of? Damn it's been a while?
