I'm looking for a 4.56 regear kit for both diffs for my 2002 Tahoe 4x4 with the 5.3L if that matters, wondering if anyone has a recommendation. Has anyone done this job themselves? I try to do my own work when possible but I do live in an apartment so space/daylight is a factor.

Thanks!

If I am looking for quality kits I give Randy's Ring and Pinion a call. Yukon gear is good stuff. They can sell you complete kits with all that you would need instead of buying piece by piece. If you have never done gears before, I do not recommend you tackling this job, AT ALL! Need a few special tools and knowledge of how to do it. You can mess it up real quick if you are not qualified. Especially in an apartment parking lot. Why are you putting 4.56 gears in the rig? Do you off road with your Tahoe? Your around town fuel mileage will suffer as well.

If he's done all of his own R&R it's possible. Remove the carrier from the rear diff housing and put it on a bench or a table wherever. Of course he would have to R&R the pinion gear there in the drive and set backlash.

The front axle assembly is removed from the truck & done on a bench as well, much easier to then work on versus the rear end but a lot of nuts & bolts to get it out of there.

I have lived in an apartment for the past 10 years, unfortunately, and I've done everything out there from ball joints to a top-end rebuild just last Xmas. I don't think I would pull a diff regear job here but if he wants to do it, more power to him LoL

The management where I live past 3-years doesn't allow auto work so i do 99% of the labor at night. No flood lamps, just the little tweaker light on a headband for all of my jobs.

Thanks. I'll look into that, I definitely want quality. I consider myself "qualified", but this job might just be too much for the parking lot/weekend. I have never done automotive gearing before but I am a non-automotive technician and have rebuilt gearboxes at work. I do off-road on a regular basis, also even though I only have 33's it does bog the truck down noticeably on the road. I also plan to move up to 35's in the future as well.

I hear ya, I do all my own work out there in the parking lot. It would be great to have a garage but at least I don't have to mow the lawn lol. I'm fortunate to have great management that doesn't say a word about it. I do work nights so I have done my share of work in the dark. Just this past weekend I installed my rock lights in the dark. I've installed adjustable coilovers on my Honda in the dark as well. Really sucks when you have to be quiet with your tools and, more importantly, not being able to cuss loudly when things aren't going smoothly!

Thanks ya'll for the info.

I would at the very minimum have someone that has experience doing rearends work with you and teach you how to set the rearend up. If you do it and do it wrong you wont know until the thing eats itself up and has to be rebuilt again. Anyone can change a valve cover gasket. Most can change a water pump or radiator out. Not everyone can rebuild a rearend differential.

There are YouTube videos and I suggest you check them out. I've done all my own work too including a blower, cam, headers, trans, etc in my driveway but re-gearing the diffs and rebuilding the trans are 2 things I myself aren't comfortable with. For me, I'd take it to a shop.

I've done a lot if not all the work on my truck. For me the risk of doing gears and it going bad is not worth the reward. Seems better to pay a few hundred to have a specialist do it right the first time rather than blow $700 worth of gears and possible wrecking the rear end itself just to say I did it myself.
