I was wondering if anyone has pulled out their steering wheel air bag? I am going to replace the center horn button with a Corvette one and to do that I need to pull the air bag to remove the screw behing it. I have heard that it is actually very easy, but I dont know if I need any special tools.
Any help would be great, thanks

Be sure you disengage the airbags before doing this, I don't know if they'll go off if you don't, but stay on the safer side.

You take an allen wrench, and insert it into the hole on the right side of the steering wheel, near the ignition. There will also be one directly on the other side, put the allen wrench in the hole over there as well.

Keep your other hand on the steering wheel so you can feel it unlock. The first clip might lock itself back into place so you may have to keep retrying.

Then unplug the airbag harnesses and it's out!

I bought the brushed aluminum steering wheel covers and just attempted to put them on. I just gave up two seconds ago on doing exactly what you mentioned above. I watched the youtube video on it and read a manual from some manufacturer company that sells replacement OEM parts and still can't figure it out. I marked my allen wrench (that is the biggest that fits in the hole like the youtube video said...) at 1 5/8" and stuck that much into the two holes (one on each side) and i "Pushed inward" and got nothing. I can't believe it is this difficult to unlock these clips.. Any advice on this from someone that has removed there steering wheel air bag compartment? any help would be appreciated.. again, thanks guys.

To be on the safe side, it is best to disconnect the cables. I didn't disconnect anything.

I removed the airbag on my Tahoe. I bought the woodgrain steering wheel spokes (only)from Autowoods. I realized after I had removed the steering wheel and started replacing the spokes on my work bench that I could have done this without disconnecting the airbag or removing the wheel. Just release the airbag and lay the airbag on the steering column face down. The wires are long enough. To get the airbag to release use the allen wrench and push it in. You have to kind of feel around with the wrench until you hit the release clip and push while gripping the airbag and pulling towards you for each side. It was not difficult. There are videos on autowoods.com about removing the airbag, the steering wheel and the spokes that will be helpful.

I had the same problem many of you are experiencing, so I asked for help. When I was shown what I was doing wrong I felt really stupid.

Screw the 1 5/8 inch thing. It's irrelevant. Stick the allen key in the holes in the steering wheel. After feeling around for a little bit you will notice a place where it seems like you can push the allen key all the way through the steering wheel. Obviously that is not the place you want. The place you want is directly in front of it, so while you gently push towards the dash against the handle, pull the allen key out of the steering wheel until you move out of that hole. Then immediately press the allen key against the surface in front of that hole you were just in. You need to press firmly in order to get the airbag to release. You'll know when it unlocks. Do this on both sides while gently pulling the top of the airbag towards you. Once the second side releases the airbag will drop towards you. From there it is very ready to figure out what you need to do. If you can't figure it out there is a How To in the Tech subforum of the NNBS section of the forum.
