Replacing factory door speaker questions

Speakers going in a 04 tahoe 2wd 4.8L without onstar or bose

Best buy is telling me i need to use a step down transformer.
is it neccesary to run these speakers with the step down?
Does the step down matter if deck is factory or aftermarket?
Is step down installed on the postive line of speaker? if not how is it installed?

On a scale 1 to 10 how hard is it to replace front and rear speakers?
Considering installer has some mechnical and electrical common sense?

just find some 2 ohm speakers. The Bose unit needs a 2 ohm load, where most door speakers are 4 ohm. Then no need for anything else.

That would be the easy way out. May do that if polk audio offers the speaker i want in a 2 ohm set up.
Can i hook up a 2 ohm reisistor parllel across the speaker?
If so what size wattage resistor?

I installed a set of infinity 2-ohm 3-ways in my buddies 06 silvy with no problems (non-bose also). Put a identical pair in my denali with no problems either.

Best buy is just looking to get extra cash for the install. I've never heard of such a thing as a "step-down transformer" in the car audio business myself. I have however installed many transformers at work (electrician) and they're all step-down, or step-up depending on which side is your line/load. However it makes no sense to modify the voltage going to your speakers.


Cliffs: You're fine with the polks (although your link didn't work) because any 4-ohm speaker will work.

ah, correct, read into it. Just grab some 4 ohm coax or components and rock...no step downs needed.

I too have nonBose system with subwoofer. The stock front door speakers say 4 ohms and Made in Mexico. I went through Crutchfield because for 50 buks, got 2 replacement speakers, wire harness adapter, and ring adapter all included. I couldn't beat that at BestBuy or Fry's. Good luck

I have a bose system. Installed a sony 4 way speaker in front 4 ohms. Have no problems with it.

Replacing door speakers scale: 3... depends on you though. I think you remove 2 screws for the panel. Lift the panel up to unhook it from the door. remove the wire connectors and there you go.

BTW, do you guys kjnow where I can get a ring adapter for the speakers?
