i have completed a deep engine repair (failed piston rings), and i am struggling to get past the issues i'm having with the steering system. i had a major misalignment with my steering gear, fixed it, got the steering column lined up properly, adjusted the inner tie rod bolts to set the toe, and i continue to get several dtcs that relate to the steering angle sensor - U0415, U0428, U0422, C0710-4B, C0544-5A. the car drives fine for the most part despite these dtcs.

my best guess is that these various dtcs are all related to the steering angle sensor (sas for short) having some nonsensical value as a result of my steering alignment issues. i have 2 scan tools here - a cgsulit sc530 and a launch x431 crp919x - and both of them claim to support sas reset, but neither of them will reset it.

i'm looking for a scan tool that is confirmed to support sas reset for the 2015-2020 tahoe, or any other advice that helps me get past these sas-related dtcs and the associated disabling of stabilitrak, etc.

appreciate the reminder to rtfm. the service and repair manual i have suggests doing 2 things to address the C0710 code: first, use a scan tool to read the steering wheel angle and confirm it varies continuously over its full range (-550 to +550 deg), then perform the sas recentering procedure.

i'll start with trying to access the live angle data.

i cannot get steering angle sensor data from either of the 2 scan tools listed above nor hp tuners mpvi3.

am i right to say that the steering sensor needs to be aligned similar to the clock spring, meaning i may have to recenter it manually? i see videos about replacing steering sensors requiring alignment before install.

EDIT: after having a look at these videos, all the videos are for the prior generations of gm vehicles, i.e. 2014 and earlier. the 2015+ sensor appears to not have a pin/center setting, suggesting it would not be possible to get it out of alignment.

i grabbed a replacement sensor, part 13590209, from the local dealership, and i have confirmed that hp tuners mpvi3 can see live angle data from the replacement sensor, whereas it cannot see any live data from the installed sensor. the mpvi3 does not support sas reset or learn, and neither of the other 2 scan tools can see the live angle data or reset the sensor.

since properly replacing the sensor requires disconnecting the upper steering column, i quickly tested the part was working by unplugging the old sensor, disconnecting battery, plugging in new sensor, connecting battery, and then checking live data with mpvi3. i have an xtool d8s coming today, and if that cannot reset and learn for this sensor, i will cave and get a mdi2 + gds2.

do i also need tech2win to use mdi2 for bidirectional functions like sas reset? i'm not familiar with this software stack.
