Unplugged this connector as a test, and the scanner could tell where the airbag fault was coming from.

Generally happy with the quality but I think this lacks some reading/programming abilities that I'm not sure of yet.

I’m wondering if anyone is knowledgeable about higher cost tools that can scan multiple vehicle types. I need a scanner for my 2008 Tahoe, but I’m also maintaining a 2004 Jeep, and who knows what tomorrow may bring.

I’ve watched Scotty Kilmer use his on his vids, but he brags about them costing thousands. Which would be stupid for personal use.

I need something to diagnose all the subsystems, ABS, SRS, stability etc. and I wouldn’t mind paying 2 or 3 times the cost of a Tech 2 *if* it’s going to cover most vehicles and be somewhat future proof.

I suppose another alternative is to take whatever vehicle is involved to the guy who owns a $5k scan tool and pay him a fee just to scan it.

Autel makes some nice stuff.

If you have an older laptop or even a tablet look at VXdiag. I dedicated a laptop to diagnostics, setup difficult but its just some time invested.

I agree George I would look at the Autel's if you want to do multiple manufactures they start out in the $400-500 range and go up from there. I think Harbor Freight sells a fairly high end one for about $1100.00 or so. A good scanner is always nice to have.

You may be best suited just buying specific scanners for each vehicle. If you get something widely used the forum members you won't lose much reselling it.

I decided to take a shot with a Foxwell NT630 plus. $120 from Amazon on sale.

Autel stuff looks good and most professional website and support, but the subscription model put me off. Don’t want to deal with annual payments.

PS- the Foxwell is not bidirectional, which is to say it cannot do everything the Tech 2 will do. For GM specific I’d do the Tech 2, however I maintain a variety of makes.

I tried an Autel and even though they said it supported my truck it was not easy to get it to the right platform. It did not recognize the truck and the reports were not complete and required further research so I didn't consider it worth the price. Also, I asked the manufacturer about support of a certain feature for my truck before buying and the response was that they didn't know because they didn't have my year and model truck to test on. Spending $250 dollars I wanted plug and play and not have to figure it out the work arounds every time.

Research, research research.
