while cruising at about 50mph my 96 tahoe gives off a shake or shudder when you give it gas.......its very bad going up hill. I replaced the u joints and now there is a low rumbling noise at about 70mph, a clunking when I stop and let off the break or while shifting from first to second gear and the shudder or shake at 50 mph is still there. The shudder was very slight a few months back but has gotten worse the more I drive the truck. if it helps its a 4wd 5.7l 2 dr sport edition w/ 158000miles

cracking or separation of metal to rubber. broken wheights may stand out by seeing a small spot that looks different from the rest of driveshaft there may also be piece of weld in the same area.

Pry up on the trans or transfer case by the mount and see if the rubber is broken.

had the rear driveshaft balanced..........no luck still got a shake and low rumbling sound at 70-75 disappears some what over 75mph. Could it be the drive shaft was not replaced the same way it came out........if so what can be done about it.....also had u joints replaced on front shaft too should I have it rebalanced also? A sales person at o'riley said the pinion bearing might have been damaged if the rear shaft was not replaced correctly any thoughts?????

Have you looked at your mounts yet? Also I do not see a pinion bearing damage that easily that quickly unless something is not seated in the u-joints. Have you gotten down and shaken the components by hand for looseness? For the low rumbling noise do you think it might be in sync with tire rotation speed or does it seem to be about 3 or more times faster?

Any luck figuring this out?

I have same Year/truck/4x4/engine and same problem...

Though mine happens closer to 70mph.

New wheel balance, new tires, new shocks did not fix it.
Nothing appears loose or broken.

The shake is BAD... Pop bottles bounce right out of cupholders.
Not really safe to drive at this point.
Going to Dealer tomorrow if I can't figure it out.

welcome to the site Brian.

I would check the rear housing on the transfer case. I had a truck a few years ago that started doing the same kind of shaking and both the drive shaft was bent and the transfer case rear housing was cracked bad allowing the output shaft to move side to side out of sync. This was causing some seriour shaking under power, especially at higher speeds.
