First post here...Im investing in purchasing a 96 Tahoe with 132K on it but the owner said the 4x4 does not work because it needs a new shift cable can this be a cause of the 4 wheel not working and how much should i be looking at for this? Any help would be appreciated...Also what else could be causing this

If it has manual 4X4 the “shift cable” is a steel rod. If it is electric for selecting 4X4, I guess they could mean a electric cable.

More likely is the actuator on the front axle. If it is the original, it is probably the problem. They are easy to replace.

I would ask a few more questions to pin it down. How long has it not been working?, etc. :)

Assuming the system is push button...

If its a 96 made after jan1 then you have to replace the wiring harness with the actuator, they changed if from thermal to electric. I just fixed my 96 4dr. I had to get a t-case switch as well as the wiring harness and actuator. As long as the problem isn't the encoder motor I wouldn't worry about it to much i got my parts for under $130 and another $80 for install, because i didn't want to install it in the snow (wish my new house had a garage). Get the parts on amazon, its the cheapest.

Does the light keep blinking when you try to engage?
Also have someone apply the brakes and shift into 4x4 as u look under to see if the drive shaft spins.

Causes
-Actuator
-4x4 switch
-wiring
-T-case switch
-Encoder motor
-TCCM
-Prox sensor
-differential problems
-probably something I forgot

If it is manual linkage I can't help you, have no clue how they work, never worked on a Hoe, Kon, Burb, or obs silvy w/ it.
