I'm not sure if you can remove the tip of the shifter or not. I know the rubber part can be removed.

If I remember right there is a bolt with a star head on it right under the shifter boot. You might try and tighten that up?

You can remove anything with a reciprocating saw.

while your tightning up those bolts, put a billet shifter in it
