Tahoe shifter cable

I replaced my shifter cable on my Chevy Tahoe and I can't get it into reverse any ideas on what to do?

My guess is it may be a 1999-2006 model. I just had to replace my shifter cable on my 2005 the other day. If he is working with the 2 piece shifter cable, the cable housing is probably not locked with the horseshoe clip?

It will go in reverse and than a second later it seems to just fall out of the gear and won't move. I can get it P,N,D,3,2,1 it just won't stay in reverse.

That's strange. Why did you replace the shifter cable in the first place? Did the truck ever work correctly?

Almost sounds like it's transmission related...no?

Can you jack the rear end, unhook up the shifter cable and manually change the gear?

There's a white box-looking thing on the shifter under the truck that allows you to extend or retract the cable. That would be the case if you couldn't get the truck to shift into Park or manual 1. I remember there's some teeth in there for adjusting.
