Hey All,

Search didn't show me anything obvious. I need your help.

I have a 2003 Tahoe with the steering wheel controls.

My clock spring is bad.

I want to switch to a different steering wheel (without controls) since I'll be doing an in-dash Android tablet.

Problem is that I understand my airbag is dual stage (I think).

Can I swap steering wheels, use a clock spring for the wheel without the controls, and keep my current airbag?

Do they make a clock spring for dual stage airbags without the harness for the steering wheel controls?

Please help before I start swiping my credit card.

Not sure, but they do make a steering wheel that is 03+ and doesn't have steering wheel controls. You will also loose some dic functions I believe though. I think 02- is single stage airbag, 03+ is dual stage... if your located in dfw Texas I will trade you steering wheels...

Unfortunately I'm in South Florida. Otherwise I'd take you up on that offer.

Anyone in SoFla want to give me their steering wheel/airbag/clockspring (without controls) for my steering wheel/airbag with steering controls?

You don't have to swap airbags, and how do you know your clock spring is bad?

Airbag light is on, DIC says Service Airbag, mechanic says it needs a new clock spring.

Your quote suggests that there's a clock spring available for vehicles with dual stage airbags & without the steering wheel controls.

If this is the case, I'm willing to buy just the clock spring and have my steering wheel buttons just be dummy buttons.

What DIC functions will I lose?

Not sure about dual stage vs single, but I went from a steering wheel with out controls to one with and changed clock springs no problems in an 04 Tahoe. That said I don't think you would have a problem going the opposite way.

Thanks for the input.

I'm trying to avoid spending $500 for just the clock spring, when:

1. I can get a new steering wheel (sans controls) and clock spring for $120
2. I'm pulling the HU anyway, which will render most of the wheel controls useless.

Can we get a confirmation on BaMaDuDe87's statement?

Just spoke with someone at the local Chevy dealer.

He said that all 2003 airbags were the same, which leads me to believe that I can migrate the airbag from my steering wheel (with controls) to the new steering wheel (no controls), and use a clock spring for the new steering wheel, saving me a few hundred dollars, and most importantly, regaining a functioning airbag.

Does my logic make sense?
