Stuff fails all the time, not a whole lot you can do about it. Things break sometimes. Just casue it could doesnt mean Im not going to use it any more or less. Like I said I have used mine for 4 winters straight and havent had a single issue.

Thats like saying "Hey if i do burn outs my tires will wear out faster but there gonna wear out anyways so im gonna keep doing burn outs" lol
I dont care what you do i was offering advice to the OP anyways ;)

Like i said before its not a wear item that would show up after a couple years of use.. My tahoe has over 100k miles and still functions fine in 4wd but a buddies truck had 60k miles when the case had to be rebuilt...

Bad example. Tires werent made to do burnouts. Auto 4wd was made to be used. Guess we shouldnt clutter this thread

Auto 4wd is the same as 4wd when active. That being said. Auto or 4wd should only be used when you have lose conditions ALLOWING the tires to move freely under you. If you dont, they will bind, possibly cause something to break. When 4wd is active some wheels move at different speeds. This causes the truck to jump and lurch. With 4wd it does it all the time. With Auto it does it when its active.

Can you use 4HI all of the time in snow.. even if driving slowly?

Also, my dealership, very knowledgable place BTW, also told me to try and not use "AUTO" all of the time.

In my 02 ext. cab silverado with the 5.3L I didn't like the auto setting so I just used 4wd when I needed more traction. With auto, it wouldn't engage until the rear tires were spinning and it engaged fairly quickly which would cause the front tires to break loose as well in the snow. Maybe mine wasn't functioning like it's supposed to but I just kept it in 4wd until I got onto clear roads and went to 2wd.

Summary of this thread
  • There is a selector knob that allows you to switch between auto, 2WD, 4HI, and 4LO
  • Auto wears out your transfer cases prematurely
  • If you're driving on (potentially)icy and/or on snowy roads use 4HI
  • If the roads are dry, use 2WD
  • GM puts the auto on the selector knob intentionally to wear out your clutches early causing you to need to buy new ones
  • Turning on dry roads with 4WD engaged eventually leads to damage and costly repairs
  • Just because something hasn't broken yet isn't any reason to keep going on the more harmful path.
  • Auto was meant to be used so people who aren't capable of turning a knob have to pay for repairs sooner than those who don't use Auto
  • Auto when ACTIVE is the same as 4WD, except it switches in and out of being active quite often causing premature wear

Yes, you can. As long as there is enough snow on the ground for the wheels to "slip" then your fine. An inch is fine.
