I Have been using manual mode to see what a difference it makes negating the AFM. If I set it at 7, the AFM stays off. The truck drives nice and smooth, instant power with all 8 cylinders on.
If I allow all 8 gears, then the AFM comes on and the truck goes into V4 mode.
So, the first 7 gears keeps AFM off; 8 allows it?
FWIW, I have also noticed an improved response going from 89 to 93 octane. With gas being so cheap, I decided wth. Much nicer drive.
