So today I had to remove the spare tire from our 07 Yukon and found that the mount has a safety catch. Rust has had its way with the secondary safety catch and it refused to let go. Not what you want to have happen on the side of the road when it's 18° out side!!!!!!

It took us 2 hours to get it free. In the end we had to unbolt and remove the entire cable winch system from the truck in order to get to the safety catch and force it open.

After we got it all apart we took a grinder to that safety catch and removed it! Yes we tried to make it work first.

I have to say that the mount system GM used on these trucks is just retarded. It's an awful design, and poorly built. I hope they came up with a better system for the 2015 mode.

Has any one ells had problems with this thing?

It is a crap design though. I agree.

broken arrow, ok
I work for a dealer and if their tightened too much or the tire is flipped wrong way it over tightens and gets jammed up in their. We replace them constantly. Poor design indeed.

I lowered mine (07 120,000 miles) a few months ago just to see if I could, it didn't go well. What ended up happening was I rounded out that square "tool" that you use to crank the tire down. When I would crank the winch tight to release the spare it would just spin. Thankfully I have a Chevy pickup with the same crappy spare mounting system and used the tools from that.

If you live in the Northern states you get salt/corrosion issues if you live in the Southern states you get cracked dashboards. Good Times!
