I've already asked about putting 80w cree projector bulbs in my blacked out oem taillights, but no one responded. I'm sure the cree bulbs would have worked, but I decided to try led tails instead. I did order some Q5 cree with 12smd reverse leds. I'll load those pics when they come in. I did this mod because people could barley see my brake lights in the daytime, and I even saw a few almost rear end me.
You need to take slow and easy with a steady hand until the blade all the way through the plastic. The blade will then hit the back of the reflector and knock it loose. You only need to make 3 cuts per light. Do not remove the plastic coating until you are ready to install. You must make sure the first bottom cut knocks the reflector loose or your next 2 cuts might cut into the reflector. Hold the tail to where the loose reflector is up against the the clear part so you don't cut through it with the next 2 cuts. If you happen to screw up you can always buy a replacement reflector.
This is the tool I used to make the cuts.
This is the piece you're cutting out. This is also the same piece that the reflector is attached to.
I used silicone to seal it up and hold the reflector in place.
I have seen these on another Tahoe with barn doors with the rapid blinking problem, but mine don't do it. You will need the resistor hooked to the blue and black wire to keep your cruise control. It will be the middle socket that you tap into.
Night time under lit parking area. Brake is not applied. You can see the blacked out oem taillights at night, but they are terrible in the daytime.
Brakes applied
Brakes on
These are the smoked Spec-d, not the clear
Hopes this helps you barn door guys? More pics.
Very simple mod for you guys tired of running the same led tails.
