I noticed my starter seemed to be going out the other day. It sounded like the motor is spinning so I relpaced the solenoid and cleaned the contacts and added more metal to them to make them beefier. Now it seems to start fine during the day or when the car is warm but in the morning cold (45°) it takes about 5 tries. The motor in the starter is spinning but it seems the solenoid isn't engaging.???????

Starter's can be tricky. I would get a new one.

Try tapping it with a hammer a couple of times when you know it isn't gonna start and see if that makes it work, if it does, then either carry a hammer with you everywhere you go until that stops working or replace the starter!
