Steering box seal rebuild

Has anyone done a seal kit on a gear box before? Is it hard? Need any special tools? I’m needing to do my seals, or buy a new gearbox, mine is leaking from the pitman shaft seal. Any help would be appreciated

I've thought about it, mine was leaking and made a pool over time, I dumped some atp 205 and it stopped the leak, its a little moist at best but not even noticeable now, pitman arm is bone dry I know eventually I will have to replace it, but it has held for a year now, So I know its the seal being worn and not due to excessive wear in the components. I think I would be easier to get a reman unit to be completely honest, or that is what I will do if it leaks.

I've never replaced the seals in one, I'm sure its not fun. If you have any "slack" in your steering box at all, I would just get a rebuilt one and be done with it. You'll have to pull it out of the truck anyway, so just put a rebuilt one back in. Just my opinion though!

No you’re right, I was thinking about that too, and I’ve been trying to stick with the philosophy of “replace it, upgrade it” just didn’t feel like dropping a couple hundred bucks on it if I can fix the seal easily

The pitman arm seal looks straightforward. Here is the manual for a 98, it says it can be done without pulling the gear though that seems like a major pain to do. I think it’s easier to pull the box and then hit the pitman arm puller with an impact.
