Ok so I bought a replacement tweeter for the Drivers side A-pillar from the dealer the other day. ($42.50) I thought mine was giving me a bunch of static and I thought it was blown. Not being a stereo guy at all i just figured I would replace it. Long story short it is not the tweeter it is the drivers side front door panel speaker.

The surprise part:

When I started taking off panels to look at the speaker I noticed that all the speakers were JL Audio C5 and not Bose. I think they are the component set. (2 dome tweeters and two 6.5" w/ crossovers) Anyway I think the Driver side one is blown out.

Is there a good way to tell if it is blown or could it be a wiring issue? Now I am thinking I need to trace back all the wires and see if the amp was replaced as well. from reading on here (which is very helpful by the way) I learned that you can still use the factory bose amp on aftermarket speakers if you use a PIC ( or something like that) sorry if I am using the wrong lingo here like I said I am not a stereo guy.

Anybody have any advice on what/how I should proceed in checking my stereo and speakers?

Thanks

Quick Check

When I worked in car audio, we would take our drill batteries (usually around 9.2-12Vdc) and put them on the wires of the speaker to make it move. It gives you a chance to check the motor of the speaker and check the polarity if not known. Remember when doing it that one side of the battery goes to the positive (+) side of the speaker and the other battery post goes to the negative (-) side of the speaker. Make the speaker "pop" out a few times and listen for scraping sounds, also look at the cone and the outer flexible ring. Also look for water intrusion in the signs of rusty terminals. Hope this helps

Also take it out and plug into Another stereo maybe home stereo and check to see if it works. If so then trace back the wiring and replace them then if that doesn't work then look for the problem from the radio to whatever it goes to.

Update

Ok so it looks like I mis-spoke about the speakers. The only JL Audio speakers in the Tahoe are the tweeters. They are C5-075CT. I just assumed they were a component set before I actually looked at all the rest of them. Maybe they were at some point I dont know. Anyway the Speaker in the door and all other doors are Bose speakers.

The Drivers side door speaker is most definitely blown out or broken. Do you think having the aftermarket tweeters along with the stock Bose could have casued this speaker to blow.

The tweeters seem to sound just fine. My question now is should I just replace the Bose with another Bose or should I just go ahead and swap out the four door speakers for aftermarket ones? I dont want to replace with another Bose speaker if it might just go out again.

Thoughts?
