The little black knob unscrews like any bolt. Pull the upper pillar covers. Then the top and bottom door sills for the cargo area. Then you should be able to wiggle the drivers side cargo panel loose. You won't be able to remove it unless you also remove the drivers side rear seat belts and C pillars.

I've been hesitant about messing with the bolts because I wasn't sure if they screwed in or not

If anyone reading this decides to just replace the factory sub, I definitely recommend the kicker 40cws82 so that you get great sound without an aftermarket amplifier

You simply removed old sub and dropped the Kicker in? Stock amp? And it sounds good? Seems too good to be true.

Yup. No after market amp required

Did you need to modify the box? I picked up a Pioneer shallow mount based on many good reviews for our Tahoe's and ring around the woofer does not come remotely close to fitting in the factory grove. I might just drill new holes and use silicone to fill in the old screw hole grooves to get a better seal. What did you end up doing? Does the woofer hit the panel if you mounted it to the front of the box like that?

I tried increasing the hole like most say to do, I've gone through on both sides and still need at least 3/8". Guess I'm going to have to cut the face off and replace with MDF board. I'm curious what everyone did to use this sub in the Tahoe / Suburbans.

The kicker i got fits in terms of size, But I had to drill eight new holes. I didn't have to make the box bigger or anything though, just new screw holes

Tahoe's and suburbans have different boxes... What may have worked on a Tahoe may not on a suburban. Which do you have?

Also you are sure you got the 8" version of the pioneer shallow mount?
