Hi, guys...

I dug around in here for a while before posting this up... couldn't quite land what i was looking for.

Wife's '04 Tahoe is a base model. Nothing special. am/fm/cd/cass radio. two things have happened recently. BOTH the front door 6.5's have gone out. Tweeters still work, as do the rear speakers and the sub that I added a long time ago.... which is when i found out this was a bus powered system. :)

About the same time, the chime quit. not even for the key left in or the lights on. i tried yesterday. This is the wife's truck, and I might get behind the wheel once in a month.

I dont know if this basic radio qualifies as Bose unit.. not even sure if this thing has an external amp or if the radio powers the speakers.

Educate me so I can try to work this out. If I have to, I will pull the door panels and put some speakers in to see if the door speakers just quit.... but any insight I can get would be appreciated.

If the factory amp or radio are shot, i'll have to replace them... and she isnt a techno-freak. if anyting, she's anti-tech. just give her a volume knob and some presets and she's happy, so obviously it wont be anything crazy. i'm too busy trying to talk her into lowering it a little bit. my reasoning is it won't affect the cargo space. :D

before i go tearing my wife's truck apart, can someone at least tell me if the NON-Bose base radio has an external amp or if it is just powered off the radio?

thanks

I wish I could help you on that one, but I had basically all the same problems (minus front speaker issues) and it turned out to be a bad HU so I just replaced it.

I honestly have no clue. Maybe take it by your nearest local stereo place and just ask them?

Update

Well, in my case, it was all the above.
I had decided to buy a new head unit... after poking around at a few local places, i went to a shop that I have routinely purchased some of my stereo equipment from. Got a new Alpine. The model# escapes me right now, but I got one with a front panel USB. They were only gonna charge me $30 more to install it, so I let em go fer it. First time I ever let someone else install a radio for me.

So.
within 5 minutes of leaving the shop... i blew the surround out of the factory sub. (it was a junkyard find anyway) the front door speakers were in and out. Got a pair of Pioneers in the front and some el-cheapo WallyWorld VR speakers in the rear doors. I pulled the old sub and enclosure out and slipped my QLogic box with 10" Eclipse sub in the rear.

While it aint perfect, it sounds pretty darn good right now.
