Right now my setup is a jl w3 in a sealed box was wondering if a ported box would sound better.

If you want louder then yes. Depends on your taste. If you listen to rock then sealed is usually the better choice on a sub like that. But if you listen to bass heavy songs such as rap then you'd want a ported box.

Shouldn't really sound sloppy in a sealed box. What amp are you running?

Its probably going into protect because the gain is too high. Try taining turning the gain dial to about half. And see if it still overheats

Just know that the gain is not a volume knob....It's to match the preout voltage of your H/U....Technically the best way to set your gain is with an SMD DD-1 or Oscope....The next best thing would be to turn your headunit to its max point without distorting audibly, next play a -5db test tone (you can download them all over online) and play it through your sub, slowly start to increase the gain on the amp until you hear your subs to stop increasing in volume and distort, then back it off a little bit.
