Drove the truck to dinner then to a show, and upon returning to it from the show we found that the radio wasn't putting out any sound. No abrupt noises, clicks, static, anything, just turned it on and nothing. Upon further investigation, the radio, CD, AUX, and even the Phone feature from the steering wheel provided no sound through the speakers, though everything showed up on the radio screen as normal.

I haven't a clue about sound systems, so unfortunately this sucks for me, especially with some upcoming road time. Any suggestions on where I can start? The only thing that set this time out from others is that it was raining, but I don't think that had effect. I've done the AUX input mod, but the only issue relating to that would be the connection to the speakers jiggled loose, but even that seems unreasonable.

Any ideas help. Hoping and not hoping this results in an aftermarket system.

As always, thanks guys. Really bummed by this one.

Loose ground, Bad amp as stated above, Loose wires? If none of that's the culprit it sounds like you need an upgrade to an aftermarket unit. I know you want to and don't want to. I was in the same boat and one day after I got my rig I pulled the trigger and picked up a HU and all the kits for it. Took me about an hour and a half and I was all wired up for sub and amp and everything was working. Sounds so much better than the stock HU.

Did some research, and amp sounds about right. So I may just start by getting a HU and amp , then subs and speakers. Any suggestions on what to get? Dont need NAV, have Bose system and OnStar and steering wheel controls. Overall my budget for a system including subs and speakers is $1000.

Just depends on what you want. There are good HU from pioneer that have lots of adjustments and good SQ with 4v pre outs. And depending on what type of set-up you are going for. SQ or SPL. I just went with a simple HU for now but when I upgrade it will be the Pioneer DEH-X8500BS. Lots of features for the price. As for amp depends if you want to power your door speakers of just a sub. You will need to find an adapter to be able to keep your steering wheel controls.

Sorry for not following up here, been a busy few days!

So, lucky me, the evening after I made my reply I started the truck and like magic, sound works, like it never happened. Even though once I had gotten to my house the night it happened, turned it all off, opened the door, closed it, and re-turned it over, it didn't work. So why this is, I'm not sure. As silly as it sounds, could water have gotten somewhere, specifically in the door, that could have caused this kind of issue?

This scare did, however, encouraged me to pick my parts now in order to swiftly do swaps later.

That said, can you dumb it down a little? SQ, 4v pre out, SPL. What do these mean..? Thanks for the help!

About 2 months ago, my truck did the EXACT same thing. I had absolutely no sound out of any of the speakers, yet everything else was working/displaying correctly. 2 Days later, it magically started working again and never gave me any more problems.

Mine did it too, but with my aftermarket HU. I thought it was the harness but no. It would go back to normal when I got out, closed the door, and got back in. Its been working perfectly since the reinstall

SQ= sound quality; how clean your sound is
SPL= sound pressure level; how loud your sound is (although you can have loud and clean)
Higher voltage preout is supposed to give cleaner signal to amp for less distortion
