Same thing happened to my truck 5 years ago with the rattling noise. Turns out the drip channel got off track, and one time it got off so bad that when I went to open my sunroof, it bent the guide rails and broke the plastic pieces that drive the wind deflector up and down as it opens/closes.
The dealer said the only thing they could do was install a brand new sun roof assembly to the tune of $2,000, so I researched online and found a repair kit for around $100.
To this day I still haven't taken the time to find someone to install it, so I've had my sunroof fuse pulled for the better part of a decade.
