I've heard some Tahoe's came with 4l80e transmissions.

Any idea what the qualifying factors were for a Tahoe to receive this heavier transmission?

It was very odd for a Tahoe to come with an 80. Some of the 2500 sububans had 80. But not many Tahoe. Most are swaps

^^This. I would say your best bet is to find a van or HD truck as a lot of those had the 80 behind everything from a 6.0 to a duramax.

Sun, that makes sense!

I was thinking maybe Police package Tahoes, but its safe to say all the diesel rigs had 'em.

I was checking out the prices for the swap and it's not cheap...all the damn extra components to make it fit correctly really add up.

Any idea how much hp/tq the 60 can take? In that same regard, what's the largest tire size I can run for 50k+ miles that won't wear it out?

Craig,

If I were you I would stick with the 4l60e myself and once you get the tires you want on it spend the money on re-gearing so that the tranny won't work as hard. If you have the factory tow package then you are even better off as you should have the added transmission cooler as well.

Down the road if you start having problems with your tranny then look at replacing it with one that has been rebuilt by a reputable re-builder specifically for heavy duty 4x4 applications.

I'm installing an 8lug 1t rear with the appropriate gears for the size tire...with 4.xx gear in the back, is there any benefit to regearing the tranny?

I'm sas'ing my Tahoe and then heading off for a multi-month excursion with a small trailer in tow. I'm beefing this thing up as much as possible before I go....funds are not unlimited, but I also don't want this thing to break on the trails.

Unfortunately there aren't many 4x4 shops in my area so all my research is online and sending the work out (outside my capabilities)
