Long time lurker.Hope someone can help. I own 2019 Tahoe .My daughter came home last week saying that the car must have been hit while she was parked. Front bumper had hole in it and some metal damage behind bumper as well. Took it into bodyshop to get fixed. It is apparently a big job because some camera sensor costs 3500 to adjust after repair. Then I get a call from my insurance adjuster asking me if I am being honest. He said I have an opportunity to withdraw the claim before he checks black box. I was pissed at him for saying that I was possibly lying. When I got home my daughter CONFESSED finally that she hit a car in front at a red light. Now I am screwed .I NEVER would defraud an ins company but I already put the claim in. My question is does this cars black box have the ability to detect a minor accident if airbags didn't deploy? I am wondering if he already scanned it and knows. I want to withdraw the claim without personally looking like a liar but I don't want to hurt my daughters rep either

I'm not sure how sensitive the black box is.

But, IMO, lying is lying, and it is usually better to fess up and take what's coming, rather than to continue to spin the lie. My thought is that if the insurance company had not yet shelled out any money associated with this accident, you can adjust to story to reflect reality, without any penalties.

Welcome to the forum from Oregon. Please post pics.

To be quite honest, I would try to withdraw the claim and talk with the daughter and let her know what kind of trouble you could get in with the insurance company with a lie like that. I would assume the black box can tell. I don't put it past today's technology that it can't. I would work out a payment plan with the daughter and it would have to be an emergency situation before she drives it again till she pays off the money. That is me though.

What do you want to bet she hit the car in front while on her cell phone. Your daughter's rep is what it is in your eyes.

We recommend that you put all your rig(s) info in your signature so we all don’t have to guess at year, make, model, engine size, trans, rear axle locker…….etc. While you may have posted pertinent info in your first post, you may forget to do it again and the info is needed by us anyway. Makes it way easier on all members that attempt to help, to have that info right up front. It is also recommended that you take a pic of your RPO codes, on the inside cover of the glove box, and post that image in your signature. All this info will greatly help those that will try to help with a problem.

If there is any other info, like upgrades, mods or recent mechanical/maintenance work done, that would be helpful in any post as well. Too many times a question is asked by the poster and after about 10 responses we find out that the poster has done recent work to attempt to fix the problem or work that was done that SEEMS not related to the problem.

Did she commit a hit and run? If her and the other driver traded insurance information and an officer filed a Accident Report then your Insurance should be aware of what happened. Unless I'm misreading something.

No she apparently hit a car at a red lite. She said it was a big truck and he had no damage so no police report.

I totally agree . Nothing like honesty . The problem is that once there is a lie ,it usually snowballs. I just worry that I would damage my daughters ins history if I admit she lied. Does anyone agree I should call and withdraw the claim saying it would raise my ins rates and that I would rather pay out of pocket

I AM SURE SHE WAS ON THE PHONE! Unfortunately legal in Florida. I actually see people READING NEWSPAPERS on I 95 at least twice per month while driving. It is the worst state for driving. Thanks for great advice

Probably "on the phone" as in "reading and/or typing". And what does it matter if it's legal or not? Not paying attention to where you're piloting a 3-ton tank can cause injury or death. The laws of any state, country or planet won't undo this. If this collision was much worse and someone was hurt or killed, would you say "Oh well, being distracted by a phone is legal here- this is Florida's fault"?

IMO, the best case is she would see this as her one free pass/warning from the universe since it was a very low speed collision and nobody was hurt. If she doesn't heed this warning and continues on, the next one may cost her or someone their life.

Cover it up or not- You two are gonna have to live with whatever decision you make. If the negligence continues and leads to worse, you'll have to live with that as well.

Insurance companies can’t read the “black box” in cars. The information is proprietary and only the vehicle manufacturer can do that. In some accidents where there I have heard information being subpoenaed but in a minor fender bender I don’t think so.

With that said, the information onstar collects is another issue. There are over 200 data points it’s constantly uploading with information. If you have the smart driver enabled on the app you can see if she had hard breaking at the time of the incident. Now I don’t know if that information can be shared with insurance companies upon request or it takes a court order.

As for a camera in the front bumper. There is not one. That’s behind the rear view mirror which detects lane markings. The sensors within the bumper are parking sensors for distance. Behind the bumper is the radar system which detects vehicles in front and apply braking and warning if it detects an impact will happen. Also if your optioned there might be a cruise control distance sensor.

So there is a lot of electronics behind the bumper and depending on what got damaged, it can get quite expensive to fix.

There is an argument that many of these systems are suppose to lower premiums because they can prevent accidents but just the opposite is happening. The more safety features the higher the premiums because they are extremely expensive to fix when an impact happens.
