Not familiar towing race cars but I primarily tow boats and trailers. Mid-size suvs may be rated to tow a 6000lb boat or 24 foot enclosed four place sled trailer but they absolutely suck at it. Try to get that boat out of the water on all but a perfectly dry flat launch or the 24' sled trailer out an ice covered inclined driveway and I will gaurantee it is a no go. My wifes minivan is rated to tow a couple of snowmobiles on an open flatbed but that does not mean it can do it on ice covered roads when it is snowing 5" per hour.
Maybe towing race cars is easy. I know nothing about it but I considered (for a second) getting something like the new Durango or Cherokee Grand and then hit myself in the head after thinking about having to actually get my 24' trailer to the cabin 275 miles away this winter and while having zero fuel economy advantage with either of the two vehicles mentioned.
The correct answer is only you know your specific requirements for any given vehicle. I looked at almost everything and decided on the 11' Yuk XL without the larger V8 and full time AWD that my 04' Denali XL had (14 daily 8 mpg towing). Tows just as nice and averages 4 mpg's better during daily driving and 20 mpg's long trips (not towing).
Good luck with whatever you decide,
