My temp gauge on my 99 5.7 is not working. It rises to about the first big mark and then just stays there the whole time. I know the motor is running a little hotter than normal so I need to make sure I keep an eye on my temp since I'm going out of town tonight.

What should I get from AutoZone to replace? The coolant temp switch/switches? If only one which one should I try first?

I'm going to go on my lunch break to get the parts.

I tried doing a quick search but my computer at work seems to not like it.

Thanks in advance,

James

This one is for the indicator is the dash cluster. but check your connector plug for dirt or corrosion first. a low reading indicate a unsecured connection. a high reading indicate a a short from gauge sensor wire to ground.

Mine rides between the first and second little mark after the first big mark (if that made sense). Always rides there and temp is spot on with thermostat.

Jonathan, where can that one be found on the motor? I changed the front one at lunch and I will take some compressed air to the other one before I leave tonight.

Have you tried putting an infrared temp gun on the thermostat housing? What ever reading you get from that add 10-20 degrees and you have a decent variable to go by. If your gauge inside the truck is showing 160 and you get say 170 on the gun then you know the gauge is wrong. Not sure how you could tell it was running higher than the gauge unless you were boiling over coolant...

The gauge is faulting and won't go over 120-130 range. I'm not overheating just running hotter than my gauge shows and that makes me uncomfortable with a new (to me) Tahoe.

he means the left cylinder head. you will see a wire going to a sensor in just above and between spark wires 1 and 3. The one on front of engine near thermostat is for the engine computer.
