The dancing gas gauge :(

My 99 went crazy one day, danced then went flying clockwise, stopped went counter clockwise very slow, finally got hung on another gauge... I got on car-part.com and found an escalade cluster for like $15-$20 bux that fixed it however it was no time untill the humming bird effect started.

My 96 Hoe spun like a broken second hand on a clock. would constantly spin a full 360 over and over and over. I replaced the fuel gauge alone. It stopped doing the 360 spin but it still does not tell me my fuel level by any means. I fill the tank then run it dry and there is no change on the gauge only slight movement every now and again.

From the sounds of this could this be a bad sender/float?

mine goes up to full when I accelerate and goes down below empty when I stop, but when my truck is still it seems to read correctly.
