In trying to diagnose a P0171 and P0174 error code, I have been going through all the “little” things before I am forced to remove and replace the intake manifold gasket.

I cleaned the MAF, checked for vacuum leaks and last night, tried to replace my fuel filter. I have the 5.3 flex fuel engine and was told by the clerk at O’Reilly that in fact I did not need any tool to disconnect the fuel line. Upon examination, I determined that the twerp didn’t know what he was talking about and spoke with a helpful gentleman at NAPA auto who confidently handed me this tool:

After no fewer than 2 hours and three Laguinitas IPAs trying to get the bloody thing attached, I surmised the rat bastard idiot at NAPA had no business working in an auto parts store and should be locked up on criminal negligence charges. But they were closed.

So this morning, against the advice of the counter clerk, I purchased the following tool and will once again attempt to remove the fuel filter:

The fact that I am going against the advice of the parts store clerk gives me great hope that I am finally heading in the right direction.

Pray for me brothers and sisters.

Thanks for the advice gang.

I purged the pressure via the schraeder valve - the one thing I did correctly. Somewhere between a quarter to a half cup of fuel still leaked out. Just residual stuff in the line and filter.

With the price of gasoline these days, I can't afford to screw this up again!

Catch it in a large cup or small bucket and put it back in the tank :D
