Things to check after front end work, alignment, or just when doing general maintenance.

Hey guys. I found something interesting today. I was checking the front end for play in the suspension items when I was changing the oil and rotating the tires this morning. I was getting some play as of I had a ball joint on the passenger side. I took a closer look and the upper control arm and it was moving back and forth on the bolt. I busted out the Haynes manual and torqued all my upper control arm bolts to 140 ft-lbs. surprisingly they were all somewhat lose. It made the ride a little tighter and I don’t have as much wondering as I used to with the truck. I think it’s something to check after you get an alignment or some front end work, because whoever touched that front end last, has never heard of a torque wrench before. Do these bolts come loose over time? Anyone ever have this experience because once I tighten the bolts up, No more play in the upper control arm.

When we bought our 04 earlier this year, noticed it had a front end noise over uneven surfaces. It took quite awhile, but i had a tire off for something. Both adjustment bolts were loose on the upper control arm.

For sure I wonder if this solve my tire cupping inside wear problem I am having. I know one of the inner tie rods are shot and there is some play in the pitman arm. But I don’t think those are the culprit.

I have heard of those bolts being loose a few times here. Good thing to check when you have the front wheels off.
