I can tell you right now, that dude is fluffing you up BIG TIME. There is NO ONE in this industry turning 12 hours a day on the least desirable jobs and leaving at 2PM every day. NO shops let tech’s leave early because they’ve turned “enough” hours either. I thought we were maximizing profit/billable hours? If this guy is telling you the truth (and I highly doubt he is), he’s 100% a scammer and/or a hack. I have worked with maybe a couple of people similar, but they sure as hell weren’t turning 12 hours a day and leaving at 2PM while “not discriminating” on the work. Someone like him is very few and far between, we take pride in our work and we KNOW the vehicles we work on (by the way, you calling in and asking a service advisor or BDC lady a question they can’t answer doesn’t mean the tech’s don’t know anything). Hardly any shops put work up on a board to be picked through by everyone. That is a recipe for disaster. No dealer does zero diagnosis and hangs parts all day, the manufacturer will NOT allow that. You have to put in a story telling everything you did to diagnose the car, if you didn’t dish one of, there’s no story. That flat out does not happen. The computer does NOT tell us what to replace.

Exactly. Very strange. limiting flagged hours by the techs is limiting cashflow through the service department in a significant way.

1000% agree. The dealer may try this...but in short order will change it to some form of dispatching.

I used to be a dealer tech for almost a decade. Prior to that worked in an independent shop for even longer. My entire social circle and family were techs either running a shop, working in a shop, or in a dealer.

LOL, that's explains a lot. No wonder you type mouth breather stuff all time.

Similar to lawyers, the 99% of dealer techs give a bad reputation to the 1% that actually have clue.

This thread is getting funny, dealer techs are like the national guard compared to the real miliary when it comes to actually figuring out problems or fixing root cause issues.

They think they're just as good, some may even believe that, but they're really just third string /part changer players in the game.

You wouldn't last 5 minutes as a dealer tech.

I'm not the one who said 6.2 is same as a 5.3 except at wot because of boyle's law.

Golf clap. Top notch.

So...

Dealer techs suck
Lawyers suck
National guard sucks

Let me guess...everyone sucks but AntonM?

What’s really funny is the knowledge I give out here for free to save people money is stuff I spent my time diagnosing. I had the very first 15 Yukon my shop saw with electrical issues caused by high resistance in the battery cables, long before the bulletin came out. I spent 2 weeks driving that Yukon around trying to get it to act up before I could diagnose it. But yeah, the independents that get the benefit of all the stuff we figured out before the bulletins came out are the best. Every tech (just like anybody working anywhere else) has their strengths and weaknesses.

Doing anything professionally vs DIY is not even comparable to each other. The angles are completely different and there is so much you can get away with DIY that doesn’t fly professionally. Look around here, there are so many threads of people throwing hundreds and thousands of dollars of parts at a car trying to fix something, but it’s ok because it’s got 100k miles and needed it anyway. Except everyone would absolutely loose their mind if a shop did the same thing with the same reason.

In our society of "participation trophy's" and "safe spaces" , where all decision making a speech is dictated by the social justice warriors based off feelings rather that logic, I get that I'm the azzhole here.

But arguing against ideologs is usually pointless, just like tryin to tell a member of the "Peoples Temple" that maybe ole Jim Jones wasn't such a swell guy after all (which I'm sure some tried to). Most people once they pick a stance' opinion will not change that stance regardless of the fact , logic or evidence shown to them.

Here's a quick litmus test ,,, think of a time where you had an interaction with a dealer tech ,,, did you leave that interaction thinking "wow, he or she is so smart and talented that I could never do what they do"?? Or did you leave the interaction thinking this person is clueless and just hoping they get lucky? Just because I'm a azzhole, doesn't mean I'm wrong.

I believe the number of good dealer techs out here are about the same as the number of honest Politicians, good lawyers, and useful real estate agents ,,,maybe there's one or two around, but its certainly not many.

Y'all have a nice time, claim your moral victory and feel good about yourself now, just think about this little thread the next time you've taken you truck in for the third time to get the same issue fixed under warranty and they start blowing smoke up your *** again.
