I would like to add that my brother had a loud and somewhat irregular rhythmic clacking that started one day after he started the engine after being parked for a couple of hours. It was fine before that and never made a sound. I found his coolant to be low and saw trails of evaporated coolant under the water pump. The noise was roached bearings and seal(s) in the pump. It must've started leaking and dumping out the coolant during his last drive and drained it as he was parked. The driveway was wet from rain so he never saw the puddle of coolant. The heat from the engine evaporated what little coolant was left in the pump so it was really dry for that last engine start, which explained the noise.

Probably not your issue, but a dry water pump with damaged bearings can make a loud clacking noise. Any chance you can upload a video of next time your makes the sound, like at a cold start?

I tried to get the noise on a cold start but it was gone before I could get my phone out of my pocket. I’m currently getting an oil change right now.

I wanted to use the Pennzoil Ultra but the local Warmart was out of stock so I went with the Castrol Edge and a Wix XP filter.

I’ll report back.

So after my oil change - on Sunday morning 2/9, I went to fire up the Tahoe on a cold start and I couldn't hear any lifter or valve noises coming from the engine bay. All I did was change my oil to Castrol Edge 5w30 and switched out my microguard filter to a Wix XP.

Same result this morning, Monday 2/10. Quiet as a mouse.

I thought all oils and oil filters were equal but I am now convinced they are not. I really wanted to try the Pennzoil Ultra - but my local Walmart was out. Maybe I'll just stick with the Castrol Edge since it's working so well too.

Nice! I don't run it on this truck, but I've been happy with Castrol before. I've never seen real numbers for it.

I chose to use the Castrol based off of a thread posted on the BITOG Forum.

I found it to be very informative.

Sounds like your problem was a cheap filter with a leaky ADBV. Stick to WIX, Fram Ultra (the gold one, don't even look at an orange Fram), K&N or Mobil1 for filters.
