ticking noise from cabin filter area help

So my bro has a 2001 tahoe ls 5.3 and today we both heard this strange ticking noise coming from the cabin filter area as soon as he puts the key foward it starts and wen he turns the car on its starts ticking faster can sombody help me figure this out

Does it do it with the fan off? Sounds like there may be a leaf or piece of paper/plastic that has been sucked up in to the box and it making contact with the fan. Had that happen to my old truck.

My '92 Suburban does the same thing and it IS the blend door. Pack a lunch and tear into the duck work under the dash. At the same time I would put in a new heater core while you are there. They don't cost much and for the age you might as well. Scott
