As I only expect my paint damages to get worse, I'm kicking around ideas of a solution. I simply can't afford an effective paint job, and a wrap just doesn't sound right for me, so PlastiDip is at least seeming like an extremely cheap attempt at something different.

That said, I am thinking matte black with glossifier over it. Keeps me in the same concept that I have now, would keep the chrome and wheels untouched.

Other options are matte black and aluminum. I'm not necessarily opposed to something else.

I do have some questions. There are only a few spots on the truck that are struggling. If I did a black matte with or without glossifier of just the roof, would it look awkward, or not be too noticeable? The roof is the main struggle.

There is also some paint defect just below the windows on the driver side. If I figured out a way to do a clean strip between the window molding and the handles, would that go over well? Would it peel easily?

Next question, for those of you that have done full dips, do you do the door handles, and how well does it hold up there?

If you've got ideas, please feel free to ask. Pics available when you click the sig below.

Thanks!

Edit:
Playing around with the image I can live with blacked out wheels, at least until I get a set down the road. I want to keep my tails, but they don't seem to go with white very well (not smoked enough, and I don't want to smoke them further).

I am certain that if I go any sort of matte, all of the chrome will go (side moldings off, put my old rack back on, dip the bumpers). But I kind of like my chrome accents. So I'm really leaning towards glossy black all, glossy black roof, or matte black roof. Still seeking input.

While doing it I might hit one wheel, just for fun, see how it looks.

Is anyone able to find a large-scale example of black with gloss? All I can find is black gloss on wheels.

Found this, but based on some tutorial videos for the gloss, that seems like it is actually a poor job.

I suppose what I could do is black gloss the roof and see how it looks, learn from mistakes, then attempt a full dip. Any suggestion on rattle can vs the DYC kit? I'm not opposed to saving a few hundred bucks by going rattle can...

From what I have heard its well worth the getting the kit. They say on large areas it lays down better and gives a better overall finish. I will probably pay someone to do my roof with a spray gun to turn out good. Either that or go to a wrap shop and have them wrap just the roof.

Even with their glossifier it isn't glossy. More satin I would say.

I agree, it is definitely not paint/wrap glossy. I would be interested in a wrap, but they are still rather expensive, and a garage isn't an option for my truck, and it gets some baking time. I'm hearing that wraps are not for vehicles that aren't stored in a garage.

Wrapping just the roof isn't a bad idea... might contact some places around here and see what they offer. The stuff on the side I can live with. The roof is just awful.

Dipping just the roof is not a bad idea at all if that's the main area of concern. Wouldn't do partials on the side, if that's what you meant with the strip beneath the windows. IMO that probably wouldn't look good.

The PO of my younger daughter's 2005 MB C230K wrapped the roof in carbon fiber film back in 2008. It was supposed to be some good 3M material according to the receipt. We bought the car in 2011 and already at that time it had started to crack all over. That's what the Texas sun does to it, even though he had it garaged at his house, but not at work.

I've also been thinking about the next move with that. Regardless of the direction, I guess I should rip it out and see what the original paint looks like underneath. If it's okay, I will just leave it as is, but if it is damaged (which I'm pretty sure it is) , I guess it's time for either dipping or just some satin black paint. I kind like the look of the black roof on it...

Dip it! I left my door handles in when i dipped mine but it ends up peeling usually no matter what so you could take the handles out and do them but then you have to replace the pin with a bolt to put the center back in the handle. I switched mine to textured centers. I have my roof dipped black right now with no gloss and its fine. I personally don't like the look of glossifier on dip. It just looks like a shotty paint job that you got from mako. I used 35 cans to do my tahoe white but since have dipped 8 cars with the spray system. The difference is night and day. Buy the gun, the end result is near a wrap for way cheaper. Also holds up to mud, dirt, and branches really well

Thanks for the input and pictures! If I go the spray gun route, whats the best source? The package on DYC is $600, and I don't think I need 5 GALLONS of paint.

You might need it for messed up panels that need redipping but im thinking you will need at least 4gal. I just dipped a magnum and it took like 3-4 gal. That sounds a bit high on the price though. PM me, I might be able to help you out on price:waytogo:
