Just throwing out my experience with the convert-a-ball. I've been using the 2" and 1 7/8" balls for about seven years with no problems. The 2" ball is used for a 20' ski boat. The 1 7/8" ball is used for pulling a utility trailer, so it is a lot less loaded. I personally can't "feel" any difference when towing versus a traditional set-up.

Is it possible to hook up a trailer without the pin in place to keep the ball from becoming "airborne" when going over a bump or dip in the road? If so, that is a disaster waiting to happen.

The pin is designed so that it can not be completely removed from the ball. When putting the ball on, the pin sticks out so that a trailer tongue will not go over the ball until the pin in pushed in securely.
