Hello all, head and intake questions. I will be looking top replace my heads soon due to previous owners stripping plug holes. Fine for now but needs addressing soon. I tow, a lot never less than 5k pounds and am wondering what possible torque increase I could achieve with particular set ups, on a budget

i have the Vinci "trucker" cam from Vinci performance. its part of their max torque cam series. i have the same engine you have only in a Tahoe and it is torquey as hell. I'm sure I could tow 5k with ease, but I also have a 2800 stall, headers, bigger injectors, intake and more. Budget is subjective as I have $1k in just the cam and injectors and I did all the work myself...the rest adds up so you need to decide how much you want to spend.

check out the cam specs on their site and this may give you an idea where to start as I'm sure he has a cam that works with a stock stall which will lessen the hit on your wallet.. his site is the only one I've seen that spells out how a particular cam performs, sounds and where they make power..

I've been curious about cam options but wasn't really wanting to dive back into my motor, have been wanting to possibly swap the heads out with something, just not sure what. Possible tune with injectors, maybe rockers etc...but like I said it's all completely in the air since I'm just bouncing ideas around at the moment. I do tow as little as 4k pounds and as much as 14k pounds on any given day

Just remember that with torque you want velocity over flow.

A TBSS or NNBS intake manifold along with the bigger throttle body would be a good setup. Its a pretty straight forward swap and can be done pretty cheap. The main expense will be the throttle body. You'll need to adapt a drive by cable setup to fit it or swap it over to drive by wire, which unfortunately is somewhat pricey. The style heads you have now are pretty good at making torque. Injectors aren't really needed until you are maxing them out, which a very mild setup like you are talking about isn't going to be maxing them out. If you go with a small cam then maybe you might need them. I've seen plenty of guys running stock injectors with a small cam without a problem. Could the injectors help? Maybe. You'll need a good tuner either way and he will be able to let you know if you're running out of fuel and need to go bigger. A good all around setup for these trucks is the intake manifold and throttle body I mentioned, cold air intake, (air raid jr. and a good drop in filter is all you really need) long tubes, a good tune and Efans. Throw in a nice baby cam like the one mentioned in a previous post or another low lift type cam and you'll be surprised what a difference that setup makes. You'll make great usable power and still be reliable as hell. Very daily driver friendly.

If your going to swap the heads, your almost to the cam. That's pretty much the ideal time to do it. I went with a cam motion cam, and it really bumped the torque through the low/mid. While doing the cam, I replaced the water pump, oil pump and timing set since I had access to it.

Helicoil kits work fine on stripped spark plug holes. They come in several sizes over, depending on how bad it is. Of course, if doing all those mods was the original plan anyway, never mind. Lol.
