Hey guys long story short my tranny blew right before winter so now I'm trying to get it back together asap.

I have a couple quick questions all replies are greatly appreciated..

Firstly, what is the black connector with two plugs going to it on the side of the tranny? It has something to do with the PRNDL I think it might be called a MLP sensor? My questions about this sensor are:

1) Will the truck not crank if they are not plugged in?

2) How much is this part at the dealer?

My other question is about the torque converter, can you "break" the TC by dropping it? I was having trouble spinning it while lining it up with the flywheel. It would turn but not freely. I read that if it isn't 'seated' properly it will have trouble spinning.

Yeah it tells the ECU and key what gear you are in, if that's not plugged in I would bet it won't crank at all. It is the MLP sensor, it's about $50 ... Did you break yours beyond repair?? I damaged mine but it still works ...

How for of a fall was it?? I dropped a 10 inch convertor for my Camaro from about 3 feet down to the ground and it was fine ...

Yeah I broke mine beyond repair trying to save the plugs.

I only dropped it a few inches from the ground but it hit hard. Anyways I think it is toast because I put everything back together and it wont go into gear now.
Would a bad TC prevent it from going into gear? Or am I looking at a pump failure on the trans?

If the TC didn't engage the pump you would have issues ,,, did you do a rebuild?? Low fluid will cause no gear issues too ...

Ok to clear things up, low fluid won't cause it to not go in gear? It did have fluid in it though.

No I didn't do a rebuild I bought a used transmission from craigslist...

I just pulled it back out (stress!) and I compared my two trannies. The old one doesn't have an issue with the TC going in completely and being able to turn free. But the other one I bought the TC goes in completely but then seems to be binding with the gears. I even tried both TC's on the 2nd tranny and it did the same thing. Could the pump be screwed on this tranny? Would a bad pump cause binding issues preventing the TC to turn freely?

BTW thanks for your replies retorq greatly appreciated!

Yes low fluid will cause the gears not to engage.

If the pump on the second tranny is bound up it would prevent the TC from moving at all ... can you look down in where the pump rings are and see 2 tabs?? I've seen guy put them in wrong and break them ...

Yeah man one of the tabs is broken :( **** is this because I improperly installed the TC? And I hope the tabs are part of the pump and not the shaft! If it's part of the pump I can just remove the old tranny pump and put it on the 2nd trans?

No don't pull it for one and put it on the other, pull the pump and install a new ring and new vanes ... it's not all that hard. You will have to drop the pan and one of the solidnoids in the valve body to pull it out ...

It was either you put it in wrong or the last guy did it and didn't tell ya ... only two options.

which part are the vanes? the round things with teeth in the middle of the pump assembly?? yeashh I don't know if I can pull that off...lol I took off both pumps on the trannies today and ordered a set of seals & gaskets for the one that doesn't have the broken tabs.

why shouldn't I put the pump on from the other?? I was thinking because maybe that pump is bad aswell that's why it blew the first tranny

what happen was...
the first tranny in my truck stopped going into 3rd & 4th. But 1st & 2nd where fine

The vanes are the "teeth" part the round part in the middle is the ring.

I wouldn't swap them simply because it's only a few minutes to rebuild the pump and you will know it's a new pump, any issues after atleast you know its not that. Also there were some differences in the pumps ...
