i got a 97 tahoe and im having problems with my tranny...park, reverse work good but if im in drive ..first gear goes good and shifts into second good but then when it tries to shift into third in just sounds like it went to neutral...i have to put the truck into second and drive in second...luckily i live in the bronx so i can just take side blocks for now but any ideas??...i also changed the tranny fluid and filter but this didnt help......also i dont know if this is normal but if im at a dead stop and i put the truck in third gear it takes off in first then goes to second and tries to go into third just like when its in drive but if im at a dead stop and put the truck in second it takes off in second...i thought it was supposed to take off in first then go into second and stay there.. thanks in advance

My 1991 K5 Blazer does the same thing after my wife drove it home in a lower gear at hwy speeds for about 30kms. It tries to go into third, but acts like it's in nuetral.

When she came home that day, the truck reeked of the burnt smell. I asked her, 'well honey, didn't you notice that the engine was screaming at a higher rpm?, you know making lots of noise, funny smell, etc?' her reply, 'Ya, but I didn't think that was important. No check engine light came on.' HAHAHAHAHA, ya funny....sigh

My neighbor thought it was a burnt out band??? IDK, but it sounded expensive and the truck wasn't worth it...we did consider swapping the tranny out from an older chev pickup sitting around the yard, but couldn't be bothered.
The truck just became relegated to our bush buggy, used to retrieve firewood from the back 40....
Took the oem hood, fenders, cab, box, everything off. Fabbed up a rad support, drivers seat support, and new box to hold wood. Oh, and painted the frame god-awfull tremclad colors. hehe...

Any bad burnt smells coming from it?
Good luck, and here's to hoping that you don't have to buy a new tranny!!!

Sounds like your 3/4 clutch pack is fried. It is normal for the trans to start off in 2nd when in 2nd. For use in slippery weather.

x2, you very likely lost the 3/4 clutch pack. That's a remove/rebuild unfortunately. You can buy used transmissions for less than rebuilding one. Of course they are "used" so try and get one with a warranty if you go that route.

Dude. I feel your pain. Let me know if you need someone to drink beer for you, while you wrench on your rig. I can hook you up.
