transfer case noise

recently i put my truck in four wheel drive just testing it out and once engaged the noise from my transfer case seemed pretty loud.... any ideas on what problem could be.. note: i havent checked fluids on it yet

So no noise when going back to 2 wheel? and difference in 4-hi or 4-lo?

correct, no noise in 2wd, and its the same amount of noise in high or low, i may change fluids today to see if that helps

It is most likely then that the shifting mechanism is not completing the shift. If new clean fluid at the proper level does not help smooth it out the case will need to be opened for inspection.
